  • Description:

They appear by the hundreds, collecting just off the beach in places like Louisiana (Grand Isle), Alabama (Orange Beach), Florida (almost everywhere), and the Carolinas. They are big bull redfish, or red drum, and late November, December, and January are when many of the biggest ones are taken. redfish.jpgSchools of big redfish work together much like albacore or other blitzing fish, herding baitfish to the surface where they work with the birds to attack them. So you can often look for the birds to help you find feeding fish.A boat and a captain who can run up on schools is helpful, but these fish can be taken from the beach or from a kayak. Just know that these fish are not the 5- or 6-pounders you find wiggling their way through the marshes in the springtime. These are often offshore fish, coming in to feed, so expect to see many in the 10- to 20-pouind range, with a few topping 30 or 40.Consequently, you’ll want to arm yourself with a nine or ten weight, 40- or 50-pound shock tippet, and at least 20-lb class tippet. Big Clousers and Deceivers will often do the trick, fly-wise, but be sure to have some poppers with you as well, just in case you find some aggressive surface-feeders.So if you find yourself heading south for an SEC game or a college Bowl Game, think about packing that rod along and adding a day of chasing reds.
