- Description:
While floating a big, wide river in a driftboat or motoring around the saltwater flats on a skiff both represent the apex form of flyfishing, sometimes you just want to find a bit of intimacy on a small creek and work that 3-weight over some pan-sized trout.
Problem is, exposing tiny creeks on the Internet is always tricky business because these are the types of waters that can’t handle a lot of pressure and tend to be closely guarded by the locals. At the same time, these are also the types of headwater streams that need the most protection in the way of catch-and-release legislation or wilderness designation.
So, be looking for a “Creek of the Week” here on flyfish.com every seven days or so but don’t be looking for us to give it all away. We”ll provide hints, as well as a couple local flyshops where you can go ask for info and hear about some of the special methods and/or concerns of the watershed.
This week’s creek is a classic tiny stream filled with smallish browns and brook trout and flows right past one of the most under-rated ski resorts in the country. You will find much Solitude very nearby but bait-fishing is allowed here so don’t be surprised if you come across the occasional empty powerbait jar. Just pick it up and move on. There are couple campgrounds to stay at called Spruces and Storm Mountain, and there are rumors of big brookies in a few of the local lakes.
This is an area known much more for it’s winter than summer activities, but suffice it to say that if you’ve got a business meeting or convention to attend in the Beehive state, you’d be wise to pack that 3-weight.
