I've asked before and received lots of responses regarding a good 8 wt rod and reel to use in Charleston, SC for chasing redfish and trout. I am looking at a teton tioga regular arbor 8wt reel on ebay right now for around 110 dollars with an extra spool and case, is that a good deal? Currently I'm still looking for a rod to match, I think that will be a harder decision.

Is anyone on here in Charleston or the area? I'll be back in town in March and could probably use a few tips as I am a complete newbie.

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with that reel at all. I have a couple and have abused them (not on purpose) and they still work fine. You might consider a St Croix Avid or Legend Ultra, a Temple Fork Professional Series( around $100), a Scott A2, Winston Ibis (250-300), Temple Fork TiCr (250 or around)or the like as a low cost rod.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I've got some ebay-ing to do. Also, I've heard that I should wait to actually cast a rod to find out what type of flex works for me.... is it a huge sin to buy before you know?

In your current case, probably not.
I would think if you stuck with a brand name (there are bunches) rod with a medium fast action you should be OK. If you are going to buy one you haven't cast, then try to keep the cost fairly moderate by your spending standards, that way if you really don't like it you aren't hurt too bad.
The reason I mention medium fast (which is most of the rods I mentioned before)is that is a fairly easy action to adapt to and work with.
The other thing you have to consider is that this will probably not be your only rod. biggrin.gif This gets a little crazy sometimes with the need for more toys, er.... rods. biggrin.gif
