Having spent a fair amount of my youth icefishing myself, I can tell you that such an intervention ( by the whale) might be welcome. Icefishing borders on the intolerable if not done with at least 2 friends, a grill full of hot meat and ALLOT of alcahol. ( Windchills in the +55 deg range help too!) . That poor bugger was freezing, hungery, sober and bored! Amature!

Thanks for this -- my seven year old got a huge kick out of it!

About 12 years ago, as a first year grad student at the University of Michigan, I had a winter-semester course in research methods. A new student from San Diego was in my class. His first winter in MI was hell. He could not understand how humans survived under such conditions. One day, the guy comes into class absolutely beside himself. He says, "You WILL NOT believe what I saw yesterday! A guy had walked out onto a frozen lake, drilled a hole, and WAS FISHING!" He clearly had never even heard of ice fishing. The idea of it was simply beyond his comprehension. To see this poor fellow so aghast at something that, in these parts, is pretty much taken for granted was just too funny. I'll never forget it.

Thanks again,

Don
