I have a SC LU 7'9" 3wt and use the ultra light Redington CT for the reel.
I would like to buy another reel for the rod, but would like a disc drag with a really light drag setting.
Do you have any recommendations for ultra light machined reels for short fly rods?

Ross Evolution. You won't second guess yourself. You'd likely email me a thank you should you get one! It's the best light reel out there. The drag settings are almost infinite (no start-up); the reel is virtually maintainance free; reel is incredibly light; the spools spin like a centrepin (well machined); they're far sturdier than they look (dropped one on asphalt); and Ross is reknowned for great service. They cost. They're worth it...consider it an investment!

BD,
I see where youre coming from, thats why I have the Redington CT.
Then what would you recommend in a click and pawl?

Scud-dog,
Thanks for the input. I will test drive a Revolution next weekend and see how it fits / balances.

You may also want to check out the Tibor Light Spring Creek reel. This reel is a sweetheat and the drag unbelievably smooth. For my money, this is the best light trout reel out there.

Good Luck!

If you can find a Hardy JHL ( i think that;s the sequence of letters,i always get it mixed up and I've had mine for yrs.) Ultralite 2/3/4 ,you'll be very pleased.

The Ross Evolution is a great reel, it has a nice smooth drag, and is light weight. Another reel to check out is the Galvan Torque. The drag on it is more adjustable than the Ross, and it has a better top end, more drag than you'll ever need.

you know, the more i think about it, the more i like my galvan OB3. i don't use it as much as i should like to since it has my 5 weight line on it and i'm using 3 and 4 weight lines/reel lately.

i would suggest taking a look at the galvan standard 2.5 (3.8oz) or 2.75 (4.1oz). very nice reels, great drag, quiet reeling. $170/$180 respectively, made in usa.

personally, i like disc drags on my rods which are used on small streams. no, i don't need a great drag for 14in and under trout, hell, i don't need a drag, but i like the fine machining and generally silent or quietly muffled click of my galvan and my lamson radius 1.5 as i reel in line for whatever reason.

i think bass pro shops offers an ultralight version of one of their classicly styled reels, 2 point something ounces maybe.

i have two redington CT reels, a 3/4 and a 5/6. nice reels.

I have a Galvan T-4 and T-5 for my 4 through 6 wts.
I should take a look at the Galvan Standard and OB's.
For some reason I thought they might be too heavy.
Thanks everyone for the replies.

I'll bet something like a Redington CT would be just about perfect on that rod cool.gif

I'll cast another vote for the Ross Evolution! Built as bulletproof as a reel can get. Take-care!

Hardy Featherweight, hands down. No doubt about it. biggrin.gif
