Hi...I'm new to the Bulletin Board and I'm new to Flyfishing. I have a question. How much of each of the 3 lines are you suposed to put on the reel?...How much backing? How much floatline? How much leader?..I would really appreciate the help...Thanks DBuck

A nice way to get the proper backing on is to rig is to install it backwards. That means put the entire line on first then enough backing to leave about a 1/4" gap (+/-) between the line and the reel. Then you get the joy of unwinding it and winding it on the right way, backing first! This method is almost foolproof. Use the entire line! If you have a level line trash it and get a decent line. It will make life MUCH more enjoyable! The leader varies but for starters a 7.5' to 9' tapered leader is a good jump-off point. The leader will not take up much room at all.

Backing: Depending on the style of fishing. Fro example, if you fish for steelhead, you better put on 75 yds or more. However, if you're fishing small streams, you will need a minimum of backing. I fish for bass a good bit and try to keep 75 yds on, but seldom get into the backing.

Flyline: It comes in a set length, so don't cut it.

Leader: Depending on the fishing and even how skittish the fish are that day. For bass, I typically use a 8' to 9' leader. With sinking line you can get away with 6'. Some trout fishing you will need 12'. 9' is a good standard, and 12' can get pretty tangled if you're not paying attention.

Note: There are several reels out there that say be sized..for example... 3/4. If you have a 4 wt rod, you may want to go with the 5/6 reel since many times you will only get about 25 yds of backing on the reel. Often it pays to go a size larger, especially if you intend on putting a good bit of backing on. Strange, but true.

Another note: Lefty Kreh says to always put on 30 lb. backing. I have followed this and agree that it's a better deal since it doesn't dig into the remaining backing.
