Could I get a good saltwater reel for about $150 or a little more? I'm going to use 8-9 weight. This is my first post but I've already had many questions answered just by reading the posts.

Good is a subjective term. If that's what the budget offers, that is what you have to spend. Check out Lamson's lower priced reel or even the Orvis mid-arbor - I think they will hold enough line for you and keep some pressure on the fish - actually, these two reels offer a lot for their price.

What are you using the rod for - what species?

Where and what are you fishing for?

Go to your closest flyshop that has a selection of saltwater reels from high end to low. Lay one of each on the counter. Look at the differences in size and backing capacity, reel them, feel them, take them apart and compare. You will see the differences!

The Teton Tioga has a strong following on the East Coast for striped bass, weakies and flounder. It's in your price range with excellent fit and finish.

If you are going for the larger and faster species you may want to save up a little more and go for something better. Add another $100 and sometimes you can find a lightly used Billy Pate or Ross Canyon BG 4 or 5. The old Penn saltwater reels are a little heavier; but, workhorses!

Have fun!
