Does anyone have any experience with March Brown travel rods. A friend saw them at a show and was really taken with them, but I've never heard anything about them. Their lower end "Legacy" series is priced at about $100 and he loved the feel.
Thanks

Hey PA,
I have only cast one model of March Brown rod, that being the 9' 5wt 6pc, so have no experience with other models they offer.

However, even though I don't normally tend to bad mouth products, I was seriously dissapointed with the "materials & workmanship." The blank did have a nice all-around action for a 5wt travel rod, as well as a nice rod/reel combo tube. But the rod had:

- mediocre ferrule fit
- mediocre overall fit & finish
- a cheap, seriously oversized graphite reel seat that belonged on a rod in the 9wt - 12wt range
- a very large, permanently attached fighting butt that belonged on a 9wt - 10wt rod

Not sure what the deal was with the ridiculous reel seat & fighting butt on a 5wt rod (that had a normal grip for a 5wt), unless whoever builds the rods for "March Brown" got a heck of a deal on a boat load of these components.

I think the same company that makes these rods also makes some rods for J. Austin Forbes (check out the specs on the mucho-multi-piece small stream rods).

Anyway, just my opinion....but did I mention I was not impressed?

I appreciate the feedback. I think my buddy is most impressed by the $100 price tag. I'm looking for a 9' 8wt travel rod as a backup for Atlantic salmon in late June / early July. Any recommendations?

By the way, this is the first time that I have traveled by plane with rods. Are there security problems taking a rod(s) In carry-on luggage or do yu have to stow them in checked luggage? I always like to take anything that I'll really need in a carry-on to be sue that it gets there with me.

Thanks again.

That's my concern. I've been on a roll lately - lost or delayed luggage, cancelled flights and all the last minute changes. I can loose the clothes, but I like to know I've got the equipment to fish and a change of underwear (out of consideration for my roommate).

I'll take a look at the TFO.
Thanks
