Hey there,
I've finished the rod with it's final layer of epoxy yesterday, it seems now about 18hr later that it is still a little bit tacky mad.gif , iI mean it isn't soft or anything but just a bit tacky, do you think it will harden out?the temp. was good in the room
and I did make a perfect mix though...and the epoxy was brand new..

what kind of epoxy (thread covering/finishing epoxy, right?) did you use? i use flex coat lite build and have found it can feel dry after 12 hours. but usually it takes at least 18 hours for the slight bit of tackiness to go away. i always give it 24 hours before i take it off the dryer stand (although 6rpm turning may stop anywhere between 12 and 18 hours).

i'd give it a full 24 hours before starting to worry about it. how many coats did you give it and how much time between coats?

dry.gif Eric made ALL the "usual questions" there. However, I would give a chance to that coating for another 24 hours...without touching any part of the surface, and putting the rod in a dry room at Tș near 80.
If this does not "finish your finish", then I guess YouŽll have to go all the way back with that work, as most of as did some time, and keep doing from time to time.

Be sure to share what happens, and feel free to ask again any questions regarding this matter...

If it does not cure completely in 24 hour chances are your mix was not exactly 50/50.
I use the 3 cc syringes. I mix to the 3 cc mark regardless of how much finish I need. I check/double check to make sure both syringes have exactly the same amount. I mix (usually with the hancle of an old flex coat brush at least 100 strokes.
Getting an exact 50/50 mix is the most important part of applying finish IMO.

Basically ditto all that has been said. Had to give the epoxy almost 24 hours more time than expected last time because we were in dense fog 24/7--the rod was being dried in my friend's garage.

Ive had bad luck with the syringes in the past. I find the best way is to use my wifes Tspn mesurers from the kitchen. I mesure out how ever much hardner I need, put all of it in a mixing cup and then wash the Tspn with soap and water, dry completely and then mesure out exact perportions of epoxy. I havent had a tacky rod yet.

Guys,
Thanks for your supportive reactions, I've taken off all the epoxy and wraps, and did it all over yesterday, this morning, I saw that the epoxy has cured perfectly well biggrin.gif

I am using some nameless stuff, the same as the "shops rod builder" uses let's call that their home brand, I think it's made here in the Netherlands though.. I had measured out the stuff perfectly, but did notice later yesterday, that my mixing wasn't really well after all..I measured the resin and harder out with two containers that I got with the product, but together the amount is pretty much, and the left over that I've saved to check out wasn't drying out equally it was fluid on the edges, and hard but tacky in the middle (my fault)...
I found out that mixing with a small amount with a dubbing needle on a piece of paper works pretty good.. I like the tea spoon suggestion, I've used the syringes in the past, but there will always be epoxy on both after use, and I don't like that unless you use them only once.
I've planned to do a two layer finish, so I can cutt off any tag ends or anything pointing out of the finish with a razor blade, and smooth it for the second finish cool.gif
