Ok, this spring will be my first real time flyfishing. I will be fishing small streams in Minnesota for trout.
It is my understanding or maybe my interpretation from the books I read that nymph fishing would be the way to go (apparently nymphs outfish dry flies). Anyway, the setup in the book looks like a simple splitshot with a nymph 12-15" away. It was suggested I use a small floating indicator (bobber) preceeding the split shot.
Anyway, books are books and real life experience is a whole other story so what do you guys suggest?

hey north hike,
glad to have you aboard, I havent fished in minnesota, but have done a lot of fly fishing. I really like to have a 2 fly set up with a dry fly on top instead of the indicator then a nymph dropped down about 1 1/2 times the depth of the water youre fishing in. you can't catch fish on an indicator any way I'm sure you'll get a lot of different opinions, on your first time out go with someone whose fished there before and can show you the ropes. good luck

I personally have found that by not making flyfishing complex and scientific I catch more fish. Try different variations to see what works for you. I use many nymphing methods. I sometimes use splitshot on deeper pools with stick on strike indicators and sometimes I just use a weighted nymph and no strike indicator. I try and keep things simplistic and it seems to work for me.

I fish se MN, and ne Iowa I fish the early season with 2 flies " both nymph's and a indicator. I use Pink Squirrles about 8-12 " apart, I run them about 4 - 10 " off the bottom. I lay them about 10' up stream and let them drift down and accross the creek. The spring creeks are pretty small that why I say I lay them up stream. it is not really a cast it is more like a flip. Try to get them to run into the outside edge. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! HAVE FUN!!!! Get to know other people that fish the area, try differnt ways, there is no 100% right way and there is not wrong way. It is what works for you.

There's a great video with Georgr Harvey on "Nymphing." Very well done and I think it will help. There must be 100 ways to nymph and you can pick the best that will work for you. They great part is trying them out and that's the fun of fishing.

Sorry, that was Joe Humphreys, not G. Harvey. S.D.
