Anyone fish this rod and have insight to share?

Also, anyone have an older Orvis HLS "Trico" 8'6" 3wt they would care to part with? (Not the HLS2)

Thanks.

Hello friar tuck
I've got one of these rods I've been using for a couple of seasons now,and I like it a lot. I'd say I was an average caster and for me this rod is always very accurate, able to handle a fair wind, and cast a 12'-15' leader with ease.I use it mainly for dries in the 16-20 size range, but it will handle size 14 bead heads with out problem. My local river is not very big but does have some (by local standards) big wild browns to 3lbs (21"-23") and the odd fish oner 4lbs. My scott has been able to deal with fish to over 3lbs in some tight corners and protect light tippets (typically 6x). I know where the 4lb+ fish live but they don't want to play with me!
I've used a wulff TT 3 wt and, more recently an SA GPX WF3 both of which worked very well. I'd guess any similar line of your choice would work (Rio grand maybe?).
Its the first "fast" rod I've used but it still retains plenty of "feel",and is able to cast a short line well when needed.
This rod has replaced my old 8' 4wt and does every thing that rod could do with a lot more authority, accuracy, finesse and strength.
I don't think I've managed to get near to its limits yet.
As you can tell I'm pretty enthusiastic about this rod (perhaps scott will pay me to write their next catalogue?!), but I've not been able to make direct comparisons with the equivalent winstons or sages, then again I've not felt the need!
Hope this helps. If you get to try one, can you let me know what you think?

I have cast several scott s3 rods, one of wich is the 8'6" 3wt. The s3 is a phenominal rod. A fast action rod with a soft tip that can fish as well as it casts. I have also cast the 5wt and 6wt s3. Very good rods. I went with the E2. Which is also an excellent rod that scott puts out. As far as I am concerned you cant go wrong with a scott.

magicmike,
as you have compared S3 and E2 5-6 weight 4 piece rods, how do you rate the differences in action. Which offers a more even flex through the whole blank rather than a stiff bottom half and a soft tip?
Very interested to hear you comments.
Cheers, Mohaka.

Mohaka,

The S3 tends to flex the hole blank when you load it up. To me the S3 seems to have a softer tip. Several people have commented that the s3 is faster that the E2, and that may be the case. The E2 feels a little bit stiffer at first and then once you work with the rod you realize how well it loads. Its a tough call, you really have to cast them both. I dont know if that helps much. The next step is to contact the people at Scott. They are good people and very helpful.

I think the rod you were watching went for $302.If you're still looking there's a new listing for a brand new 8'6" 3wt 4pc.s3 on e-bay now.
