Hope I'm in the right place here to ask for help! If not, any suggestions on where else I might ask these ?'s would be greatly appreciated! smile.gif

First, let me say - I know nothing about fishing or fishing equipment! I have a couple of inherited fishing rods in storage that I'm hoping to get some information/value ideas on so I can sell them to someone who can appreciate them - the one I haven't found any info on, is labeled "3-JAYS since 1922 GRAPHITE J. Kennedy Fisher Inc. Los Angeles CA 90043" - it is comprised of 2 pieces, total length approximately 8' with a cork handle & 9 of those little metal hole thingy's you thread the line through, plus another little one of them right down by the top of the handle - it is a very dark gray or black in color... this belonged to my father-in-law who was an avid fisherman here in the Pacific NW his entire life - he was very well-known up in Oak Harbor - but he died in 1987 so I can't ask him anything about it... the story I got way back when was that it was custom made, but I don't know when - I'm guessing sometime in the 1960's-70's - it has been stored in a cloth case inside of a tube - it was shipped to my ex-husband back in 1983 when he was working in AK (the postage stamp is still on the tube) so I know it for sure was made well before then... anyway, if anyone as any info on this rod (what kind of fishing it would be used for, age, value, etc), I'd sure appreciate it! I have some pix, but am not sure how to post them here...

Thanks for your help!
Linda
UPDATE - I ended up listing the rod on eBay - if you'd like to see pix of it or can provide me with any more info on it, I'd sure appreciate it! I'm especially interested in it's age or close guesstimate & a rough value... thanks for any help you can offer! Here is link to the listing ~

Linda:
I'll take a stab at. The fact that it's graphite, probably dates it to the early 1980's. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't built too long before it was shipped to your husband. The guides also look to have a hardloy ring which it would also place it being made in the early 80's.
I'm not even sure it's a fly rod. It may be a mooching rod, but they're usually a bit longer. If it is a fly rod, the fact that the builder used non-traditional guides on it may make it difficult to move as one even, on E-Bay. It's a nicely built rod, good matching of thread color to the blank color. It's well wrapped, the reel seat and handle aren't what you would typically see on a fly rod.
J Kennedy Fisher massed produced rods and blanks. So it's not an uncommon blank. I've built at least a half dozen rods using their trolling rod blanks and if I remember correctly they weren't an expensive blank.
It's custom made but who made it? It could have been a friend building it as a favor to your father-in-law.
As far as value, again a guess, the bid is at $70, if it got higher than $100 I'd be surprised. That's probably what the rod is worth today.
I don't know of any particular sites but if you google, "rod building-fishing rods" you might find a couple of sites where real fishing rod builders hang out and they could give you a better evaluation.

Thank-you so much for the taking the time to advise your thoughts on this rod - it's been difficult to get much info on it! I believe it was custom made by my husband & his dad when my husband was a kid which would have been in the 60-70's, at least that was the story my husband gave me way back when - the rod was very important too him because of it... I'm sure you are right that it was not an expensive rod at the time - my father-in-law was not an extravagant man by any means, but I'm pretty certain it had to have been made before the 80's because my husband was away in college & then working for the Natl Fisheries Dept up in AK starting in 79' & my father-in-law was very ill around the same time frame & no longer able to fish - unfortunately, neither of them are avail for me to ask ?'s of now... I did go ahead & list it & it has sure generated a lot of attention, but I still have no idea of the real value, which I guess really isn't important - I'm thinking you are likely correct though that it's no more than $100 or so - frankly, I'll be happy with whatever it ends at & hope that whoever ends up with it will be able to enjoy it, seems a shame to just keeps storing it! Thank-you again for your help - I do appreciate it!
