Here's a typically newbie question for you..I'm very new to the sport and and am in the market for a new 5wt. and 9wt. fly rod. I'm looking at "high end" equipment that I can learn with but still appreciate for many years moving forward. I primarily fish in the northeast. Any suggestions? Thanks..

I could use a bit more information.

For the 5 weight:
What kind of action do you want?
What kind of fish are you targeting?
What type of flies do plan on casting?
How much brush do you have to deal with?

For the 9 weight:
What kind of fish are you targeting?
Are you using this rod for freshwater, saltwater, or both?

I was initially looking at both a 5wt. and 9wt. but, I've decided to focus on saltwater first (boat and inshore). I'm in RI and would be fishing for stripers and blues..Looking at the 9wt. Scott x2s, T&T horizonII or helix and Sage Xi2..Any opinions on these fly rods? Thanks H

I don't have an opinion on the T&Ts since I haven't casted them. I have fished both the Sage Xi2 and the Scott x2s. Both are quality rods. I own a 9, 10, and 12 in the Xi2. The Scott x2s is not as fast as the Xi2 which would be better for someone who is not used to bigger rods. The Xi2 has more casting and lifting power due to its stiffer butt section.

Have you tried any of the Winston 9-weights? People say they're really nice. H

I have casted the B2MX in an 8 and 10 weight. They are a little stiffer than I like for my own stroke, but you can cast a whole line easily. The tip isn't as soft as the Xi2 or the X2S, so it isn't as forgiving. With you just getting into big rods, I'd lean towards the X2S or the Xi2.

Really the best thing that you can do is cast the rods and choose which one works best for you.
