I am about to buy an orvis 3wt superfine to use for pond fishing around my house in Louisiana. I used to use my 5wt trout rod for bluegill and bass, but would like more of a fight from these sunfish.

The problem im having is line selection, should I get a sharksin line or rio gold wf taper or get something like a rio selective trout DT line. I want to use this rod for small trout streams as well, but it will be primarilly used for bluegill and bass.

so am i better off getting a wf line with a heavier taper or a dt line, or should i get an extra spool for trout fishing. Also when it comes to fishing those small streams, and pools, is the double taper the definitive way to go?

please respond with line suggestions for both with this rod.

Also one last thing, the flex of this rod is full, so i don't know how well a gpx and rio gold would be on this rod to begin with. So i might need a line designed for a slow flex rod.

I like Cortland 444 peach (DT) for my medium and slower action rods.

If it was me who was going to fish like you describe, i'd use a Rio Selective Trout II in a WF.

It's going to come down to casting style.

If you have to work around a lot of brush and are forced to roll cast quite a bit, I'd go with a DT line like the Rio Selective Trout II or SA Mastery Trout. The DT will allow you to aerialize more line efficiently on the roll.

If you are going to be casting more overhead, go with the WF styles of the Rio Selective Trout II or SA Mastery trout. The WF taper will allow you to shoot more efficiently and present more gently.

I would stay away from the Rio Gold or SA Mastery GPX. The Rio Gold is 1/4 line weight up in the head. The SA Mastery GPX is 1/2 line weight up. For a mid flex or tip flex rod, these lines are fine. For a full flex rod, they are a bit head heavy.

I took that into account. The Rio ST line has a 48 ft head and is pretty much a DT line for that distance. Usually, that's plenty for a roll cast, but still has a running line for those long casts.

What the heck was I thinking. We are talking 3 weight. Anyone who needs to roll out more than half the line length on a 3 weight should be looking for a bigger stick.

There are only two lines I put on my 3 3wts, DT (either SA Trout or Rio Sel. Trout), or Wulff Triangle Taper - mostly the TT... same goes for my 4wts... I don't move into WF lines until I get to 5wts or higher, and even then use the TT a good bit of the time.

you can get orvis wonderline gen 3 wf and dt lines for $22-25 right now. orvis
