got fish?
Last weekend I went to Cabelas to purchase a new fly set up for my husband for Fathers Day. I had read some information and had a general idea of what I wanted. I knew I wanted a 6wt rod since we will primarily be fishing for trout.

We went fishing for the first time this weekend and my husband was having a hard time casting while I was not (I also bought a brand new setup). After some research we figured out they sold us a 5wt setup for him and I have 6wt.

So my question is there really a big difference between the two - I see in the thread below most of the comments are to go with a 6wt. Should I take it back and get a 6wt since that was what I had intended to get or will he be okay with a 5wt once he figures it out?

thanks for the help

Maybe you're the better caster. wink.gif

They're shouldn't be a big difference.

Does he cast your 6wt better?

Pete is right. There isn't that much difference. Switch out the rods, and see if you can cast the 5wt. Maybe that you are just a better caster. One thing, make sure that the 5wt has a 5wt line, and the 6wt a 6wt line. Good Luck!!

Thank you for the replies - I will have him try it tonight and see what happens.

When I taught beginner's classes, I found, for the most part, women picked up the casting technique faster/easier then men. Women, usually, did not have to "unlearn" methods of throwing bait/lures (power = distance). In any event, after switching rods, if you find it as easy to cast, give him a few pointers.

Ha! Be careful Kim. You know how they say that fly fishing is one of the things a man should never attempt to teach his wife? It goes both ways!

I tried to give my boyfriend pointers when he attempted to learn to cast. He snarled at me to leave him alone then got frustrated and gave up. He has never touched his fly rod again, yet I can't use it and he won't sell it, because he "might want to try again someday". So a perfectly good Sage rod sits in the corner taunting me.

My guess would be that the action makes more of a difference than the line WT when are comparing a 5 WT and a 6 WT. Are they both the same brand and series??

I would not trade in the 5 WT though. Unless you live in NZ or fish alot of lakes with stocked trout here, the 5 WT is more than enough.

As you two gain more experience, you will most likely start to fish lighter and lighter WT rods.

I have bottomed out myself with Sages 000 Wt!
