Elkhair Caddis
- Resource Types: Dry Flies, Trout
- Equipment Types: Dry Flies, Trout
- Brands: Dry Flies, Trout
- Description:
Start the thread at the eye of the hook using a jamb knot. Then wrap to the rear of the shank.
Take a piece of fine gold wire (4-5 long) and tie it in at the rear of the fly. The wire ribbing will be used later to tie down the hackle
Next, dub a smooth body that has a slight taper (larger at the front of the fly, smaller at the rear). Finish the body at the start of the head space
Tie in a dry quality hackle at the front of the fly. You can trim the hackle to size if necessary or select one size smaller hackle than the hook size
Palmer the hackle to the rear of the fly.
Now use the gold wire to tie off the hackle. For this fly it is important to wrap the ribbing the same direction as the palmered hackle. After securing the hackle, use the remaining gold wire to rib the fly. This will make a very durable fly. Tie off the wire before the head space.
The down wing is made of elk hair and should be fanned out when tied in. The tips of the hair wing should be at least to the rear of the body. Maximum length to the bend of the hook. Remember to use three increasing pressure wraps to securely tie in the wing and cause the hair to flair. Trim off the hair butts in front of the eye of the hook at about a 45 degree angle.
You can do the whip finish now, right at the wing tie in point or lift up the elk hair butts and place it in the head space.
Apply head cement.
