Monster Bonefish Off Oahu

March 7th, 2007

Of all the species of fish that the fly fisherman can pursue, the bonefish just may be the perfect adversary. Streamlined for speed and built like miniature rockets, these silver predators warily stalk the near-shore reefs and shallow warm water flats of the world.

Christmas Island. The atolls of Belize. The Florida Keys. The angler can only dream of hooking up with a trophy bone at one of these world renowned locations. But if a double digit bonefish is what you want, your best shot will come in the crystal clear waters off Oahu, Hawaii. Minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki lies a largely untouched bone fishery ripe for …

Warm Weather Getaways

January 7th, 2007

With winter bringing short days and brisk air, finding motivation to get out on your favorite nearby stream can be difficult. But instead of taking a vacation from fly fishing, take a vacation for fly fishing. From the Caribbean to New Zealand to America’s southern states, this is a list of the world’s finest warm weather getaway lodges, all catered to the angler.

Sea Hawk Divers Lodge, Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Some say that Isla Mujeres (Island on the Women) got its named from the Spaniards who witnessed an island full of women and completely void of men when they arrived. Where were all the men? The men were out fishing the turquoise waters of …

Angling the Androscoggin- A River Redeemed

December 4th, 2006

Northern New Hampshire is an incredibly beautiful place for fly fishing. There are tall mountains and steep valleys with the runoff from the mountains flowing into clear and inviting streams and rivers.

However, this was not always the case. At one point, logging and related industries polluted the New Hampshire’s larger rivers to the
degree that they nearly killed off all of their native species. The most infamous of these rivers for its pollution was the Androscoggin.

But now, some 30 years later, it is a river redeemed. Since the Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 the Androscoggin continues to become more beautiful and more full of life each day- truly one of New England’s finest fisheries …

Casting High into the Sierras

October 5th, 2006

For a certain breed of fly fisherman, the primary goal of a fishing trip lies in experiencing a reconnection with the natural order of the wild and a chance to revel in the primal beauty of uncivilized landscapes. While this fisherman may enjoy hauling twenty-inch rainbows from beneath a suburban dam within arms reach of his car, he ultimately prefers a day lost among evergreens and columbine, luring colorful twelve-inch beauties from clear mountain waters where a lone foraging black bear provides the only audience for miles around.

For this type of exploratory angler a backcountry trip into the High Sierras of California is an absolute must. Here one can chase the ghost of John Muir through …

The Father’s Day Bass

July 7th, 2006

I recognized him immediately. The classic hungry mouth always in search of food, the heavy sagging belly. I knew his type. I had seen ones just like him before. He moved slowly like he had all day to do whatever it was he was doing. He paid little attention to me. He simply lumbered away without a single look back.

I knew we were not done, though, and that our paths would cross again soon. In fact, I vowed to make it happen.

“I will catch up with you later,” I told him.

That is how my Fathers’ Day began, making promises to a fat largemouth bass with an attitude of superiority. I could not wait to make good on my …

Bonefish Heaven…Los Roques

January 2nd, 2006

As the holidays end and the dreariness of winter sets in, avid fly anglers can do several things in preparation for the spring.
They can sit indoors, mend and care for their fly rods, reels and line. Many prefer to settle in to their tying desks and bang out hundreds of flies in anticipation of melting snow and a new season, or they can head for warmer weather and break the winter doldrums and go sight fishing for Saltwater Bonefish. The powerful bonefish can be pursued in many warm water destinations and while Stephen Vlaetas’ book The Bahama Flyfishing Guide is a great guide to that vast chain of cays, the Staff of FlyFish.com took a trip further …

Patagonian Paradise

December 21st, 2005

The boat’s outboard splutters to a halt. The waves from the bow fan out ahead and break along the sandy beach. The boat follows behind, gliding towards the bank, the crunch on gravel echoing through the now silent valley as we land. Within minutes I am crouching down, 4- weight in hand, watching five large trout feed in very clear, thin water. I am in Argentina.

Now, I’ve always thought I was good at spotting fish. When not doing the day job I often find myself guiding guests on the River Kennet in Berkshire. It’s my chance to show off to inexperienced, and sometimes experienced, anglers my sighting skills. These moments are highlights of my fishing life: picking out that camouflaged …

Fishing Poles

August 24th, 2005

Poland is not exactly the first fly fishing destination that springs to mind when anglers consider a short break in Europe. But that could all change this year - thanks to the first group excursion organised by a British travel agency, and the fact that it’s the venue for the 2005 European Fly Fishing Championships. The Poles are regarded as top class fly fishermen and, after experiencing three days on the River San in the south eastern region, I can understand why.
This massive freestone river winds it way through countryside of lush fields and forested hills close to the Ukrainian and Latvian borders. Not much has changed here for centuries: The peasant way of life continues with workers toiling …

As Neah to Saltwater Paradise…

June 9th, 2005

Neah Bay is located at the junction of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the southern tip of Vancouver Island and Pacific Ocean. This water is a great crossroads of upwelling currents bait and fish. This melting pot literally attracts salmon from California, Washington, and British Columbia as these fish migrate to and from their natal waters.
These nutrient waters hold bait so well, there is a salmon species and population feeding in the area virtually twelve months of the year. My favorite target in these waters for the fly rod is the surface feeding coho salmon.

If there is one word to describe Neah Bay, that word would be “Dramatic.” From the wave …

Undiscovered Lithuania

June 9th, 2005

If you were to spin the globe and stick pins in at all the popular fly fishing destinations known to date, I guarantee Lithuania wouldn’t even rate a mention. This, despite the fact, that 25 kms north of capital Vilnius is the geographical centre of Europe.

We all read articles and magazines plagued with the usual destinations. The information gets repetitive with time, yet there are still many untouched waters in this world offering a high enough caliber of game fish to ignite a spark in the mind of any adventurous fly fisherman.

With its lush green countryside and winding watercourses that cut through forests and meadows, Lithuania is rawer and more untouched with regard to fly-fishing than any other destination I …
